ACTIVITIES-W2
My second week in Indonesia began with
an exciting task as part of the internship program at PGRI Semarang University
(UPGRIS). I was assigned to observe teachers at SMP YSKI Kristen, an
opportunity I had been eagerly anticipating. On the first day, I spent my time
observing the teachers in action. I learned so much from their teaching methods
and classroom management, which were completely new compared to what I was used
to back home.
Among the teachers I observed were Mr.
BD, the Physics teacher, and Mrs. ED, the Math teacher. Mr. BD had a unique way
of explaining complex physics concepts, using practical experiments and
real-life examples to make abstract ideas easier to understand. I took careful
notes, impressed by his ability to make the subject both interesting and easy
to grasp. Mrs. ED, on the other hand, taught Math with a calm yet authoritative
presence, guiding students through problems step by step while encouraging them
to think critically. Her patience and systematic teaching approach were truly
inspiring, and I could feel the respect the students had for her.
Throughout the week, I also had the
chance to explore the culture and history of Semarang thanks to the volunteers
from UPGRIS, who took us on a city tour. Our first stop was Grand Maerakaca, a
beautiful cultural park that showcases the diversity of Indonesia’s traditions
and architecture. I was amazed by the intricate traditional houses from various
regions of the country, and I felt deeply immersed in Indonesia’s rich cultural
heritage.
Next, we visited Sampoong Kong, a
historic temple connected to the Chinese community in Semarang. The peaceful
atmosphere and stunning architecture of the temple were truly impressive,
providing a deep insight into the spiritual and cultural harmony of the city.
The tour continued with Lawang Sewu, a historic building that once served as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. Its grand colonial-style architecture was remarkable, and the stories behind the building, especially during the Japanese occupation, added a sense of mystery and depth to the experience. As we walked through the halls and learned about its history, I could not help but feel the weight of the past in the air.
Finally, we explored Kota Lama, the old
town of Semarang, which felt like stepping into a different era. The narrow
streets, colonial buildings, and quaint cafes created a charming and nostalgic
atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the city’s history and how the
different architectural styles tell the story of Semarang’s development over
the centuries.
Throughout the week, I not only gained
knowledge about education but also immersed myself in the rich culture and
history of Semarang. The combination of observing dedicated teachers, exploring
the city, and experiencing local traditions made this trip truly unforgettable.
I returned with a wealth of knowledge, inspiration, and a deep appreciation for
the unique blend of tradition and modernity in Indonesia.
